Does a Debit Card Repair Credit Like a Secured Credit Card?

There are differences between a debit card and a secure credit card that everyone should be aware of. Before you get a card that you are unsure about read here to learn what you need to know to help you make the right choice.

First you need to be informed that there is a difference between the two. A debit card is offered through a bank and is linked with a checking account. A secured credit card is a card that you have to put money down to establish the limit that is offered with the card. There are many different options out there when you are looking for cards, but when you are making a choice between these two you should know that there is some of your own money on the line.

Debit Cards

Banks give you the option to have a debit card that is directly linked to your checking account. A debit card can be very helpful if you have problems with credit and can pay off your bills. A debt card only allows you to spend the money that you have in the bank. Keeping control over this money is very important if you have other financial obligations because once the money is gone then you are on the hook for what ever you owe. Many people that have bad credit can get a debit card through a bank, but by having this card it in no way helps your credit score or repairs it. Since a debit card is through a bank then there is no information that can be reported to help improve your credit. Often time people get debit cards and think that they are helping their credit when in fact they are not affecting it at all.

Secure Credit Cards

When you are offered a secure credit card you must put funds down as collateral. This can be a limited amount and there are usually costs that are associated with the cards. Since this card has funds that you have put forth then you can set a limit that you are comfortable with. Companies have you put the funds down first just to ensure that you pay your bills because if you don’t then they will have the money that you have charged. A secure credit card can be a great way to build credit if your score is low. Once you have given the money as collateral you will be able to make charges and then pay them off every month. If you choose not to make the monthly payment towards what you have charge then the money will be taken out of the money that you put down. Secure credit card companies report your progress and it is important to stay on top of your bills if you have bad credit.

Making a Choice

When you find yourself at the crossroads of making a decision between a debit card and a secure card you should know what is best for you. Since everyone has different needs and wants then making this decision must be well though out. If you are interested in spending only what you can afford and want to play it safe then a debit card might be what you need. If you want to improve your credit and set the spending limit that you want then a secure credit card is for you. The only thing you should know is that with a secure credit card there are charges associated with the card and with a debit card there are usually no charges at all.
