Your credit report is so important. It is so important that you need to protect it at all costs. You might always hear that you need to fix errors on your credit report whenever you can. Are you sure of how you can do this? Here are some tips you can think about when you go to clean up that credit report of yours.
An Error Defined
First you need to know what an error is, that way you can check for it. An error is defined a couple different ways. First, it is something that you did not buy, or something that was bought by a person who does not have authorized use of your account. Second, it is something that is inaccurately depicted, if you are charged incorrectly or charged for a different date then it actually was. The date may seem like a small item, but you need to change it. If the wrong date was bad for the store then you might be affected. Third, if you are charged for something that was delivered to you and you did not agree that it should be sent to you. You did not want this, but someone sent it to you anyways. You should not be affected by this.
Fixing Your Report
First, you need to report any errors that you may find right away. Do not let this charge sit around for any longer then it needs to. You do not want anything, even small errors, to affect your score negatively. You need to send a letter detailing the error and what you want to happen with it. Include all the important relevant details so they get a clear picture of this. Include a copy of your credit report with the highlighted charge.
You have the law on your side. The Fair Credit Reporting Act states that if something on your credit report is false, then it must be removed. You need to take advantage of this right away and go through the process until it is done. If anyone gets your credit report without proper authorization, then they can face fine and jail time.
Look Out for Your Credit
70% of credit reports have some sort of error on them. Don’t think that it won’t happen to you. Do not let these errors set you up for higher interest rates, when you know that it can be easily fixed. Your credit report is what will become your credit score. This really should be all the motivation you need to get that credit report clean.
