It seems like everything involved your finances come with some sort of fee. Using an ATM is no different. You may be tired of hearing it, but fees can be involved when you use an ATM. You need to know what types of fees you will be facing and how you can find ways around this. You do not want to spend any of your hard earned money on fees! Let’s see how you can save money.
Fees, Fees, Fees!
ATM fees are no small matter. Banks take in around a combined $2 billion in fees collected from ATMs every year. The way they get you is if you use an ATM that does not belong to your bank. If you belong to Bank of America, and you use a Chase ATM, then you will most likely be charged a fee, which will call this a surcharge. They can even hit you with two different fees, because you do not belong to their bank, therefore it is tougher to process your transaction. This fee can be anywhere from $.75 to $3.00. After a while, they can really add up.
How to Avoid Fees
In order to avoid fees, you need to pay ahead on your ATM usage. Become familiar with fees that your bank charges. You also need to be aware if there is a monthly maintenance charge that comes with your bank. Know if there is a difference between using an ATM, and going inside the actual bank. If you can save a few dollars by going inside, then you probably want to do it. After you become familiar with your bank you should then know what other banks in your area charge if you were to use their ATM.
When you figure this all out you can then plan ahead. If you know you will need money, and you are by your bank’s ATM, then stop and get money. Do not wait until the last minute when the only other option is using a different ATM. That way you do not lose any extra money you could have kept.
If your bank does not have ATMs, then see how they work out the whole ATM process. They might have an agreement with a different bank to allow for the usage of their ATMs. In that case, you need to know which ATMs are not off limits. Sometimes there will be no set bank that your bank deals with; instead you might just get reimbursed for any fees that you might come across.
No matter the case, you must get to know the fee structure regarding all aspects of your ATM usage. You do not want to be taken by surprise at any fee that may happen. So do not let them fool you. Know what fees you will be facing, and then look for ways to save that money!
