Money Lessons to Help Your Kids

Hopefully you have learned many great money and credit lessons in your life. Why don’t you pass those on to your children? It could really help them in their future.

You know all those money lessons you have learned in your life? A lot of those lessons you may have learned the hard way. Have you ever thought about passing those onto your kids? Do not let your kids learn money lessons the hard way. Help them by giving them some tips to live by. It is something you can do to make sure your kids really know how to manage their money.

Save, Save, Save

This is a large part of the financial battle. The older you get the tougher it becomes to start saving. If you give your kids an allowance this is a good chance to start the saving. Make a deal with them. You will give them an allowance, but part of it they have to put away. This will set them up for a bank account. It will also put it in their head that saving is not as hard as it appears. Lay out all the things that this savings will help with in the future. It can enable them to go to college, or even buy a home. It is important to alert them to all the positives of saving. Do not let them start when it is too late.

What Do You Want? What Do You Need?

They need to know that there is a difference between these two aspects. What you want is not always what you need. What you want may be that new dress, or that basketball jersey of your favorite player. What you need is money for bills, and food. Making that distinction at an early age can really be beneficial. Kids get in trouble when they are given money from their parents and allowed to spend it on whatever they want. Let them spend money on fun things, but make sure that it is not all blown away. They need to know what is really important.

Smart Spending

Kids may not actually need a budget, but practice does not hurt. Help them keep track of what and when they spend their money. In later years they will need to budget their money so that they pay their bills on time. So little things like mock budgeting when they are younger can really be helpful. You just need to help them know what they are spending their money on, and when they will need to pay extra attention.

Start Them Young

If you start young with your kid, then it will help them in the long run. As soon as they are old enough to truly know about money, then help them learn how to spend and save. It can save both of you in the long run. Help your kids before they have to learn about money the hard way.
