Ah, the golden years. They came fast didn’t they? By now you probably realize that life does not end at 50. Far from it! It may seem like you are trying to catch up to life, but it keeps trying to pull away. Those financial tips you used when you were 40, well they still work, but you need something more. Here are some financial tips you can use to your advantage.
Senior Discounts
It’s funny how things come back full circle. At one point in your life you probably took advantage of great student discounts. Well now you can do the same thing with senior discounts. You may not even know, but a lot of companies offer discounts to their seniors who are customers. It is not something to be embarrassed about. You have put in your time and money, now it is time to get something back. You really have earned these discounts.
Retirement Accounts
When you get over 50 years of age you can start to contribute more money to certain qualified retirement accounts. This allows you to help play some catch up for retirement savings that you may have missed early on in your life. When you reach 60 years old you can start to distribute money from your 401(k) or pension plan without paying that 10% tax that usually comes with doing so. But overall you really need to take a look at how your retirement fund is doing. Will it really be set up to help you when you retire? It is important to look now because you do not want to be a year from retiring only to find that you do not have money lined up to take in during retirement.
Look at Your Insurance
You should be doing this every decade of your life. See if you can get your insurance rates lowered. If you have been a loyal customer with no insurance trouble then you need to see if they will work with you and help you out. The older you get you might be able to get your rates lowered. How is your life insurance? You are up over 50 now. Who is going to look out for your family if something happens?
It is important to use the previous tips to your advantage. You always need to make sure your money goes as far as possible. With new age comes new financial responsibilities. You cannot sit on the outside and watch the world fly by. You need to be in the middle of the action. Just make sure you are being smart about it.
