What To Do If Your Wallet Gets Stolen

No one enjoys the feeling of realizing that your wallet has been stolen. Hopefully this does not happen to you. How do you fight that hopeless feeling you get when this realization hits? Here are some tips on how to get back on track.

Having your wallet stolen is probably not something that is on your “to do” list. But what happens if that situation arises? What should you do? Your first thoughts will probably be your financial protection. You hope that these people who stole it did not go straight to the ATM or the mall and spend spend spend. Well here are some things you can do as soon as you find out your wallet has been snatched.

My Wallet Has Been Stolen…Now What?

First thing you need to do is cancel all of your credit cards. The company will cancel your card as soon as you tell them it has been stolen. So you do not have to worry about anything after that. If the person who stole it tries to use it, they will be told that this card does not work.

If you had anything with your bank account number taken, then you will need to fix that as well. Immediately find out if this is true, and then take action. Cancel that account, and have everything moved over to a newer account. You should not waste any time.

If you had your social security card is there, they now have it. You will then need to take steps to protect your identity. This might be a good time to take that SSN card out of your wallet. It is way too important to be hanging around. Plus, some major damage can be cause if something were to happen to it.

Cancel any other cards you may have that the thief now has access to. You do not want to be on the hook for any of their actions. So make sure they cannot hurt you.

Look to see if they got away with any insurance cards, or health insurance cards, then alert the providers. This is big time insurance fraud, which you do not want to be a part of, because if will be a hassle for you as well.

Most importantly, however, alert the police! Get them on the case right away, that way you can hopefully find the person or persons who did this. While you are canceling cards, they will be on the hunt. These people will need to be caught, so they do not strike again. Let the police know what has happened, and where/when it took place. Hopefully they will find your wallet.

Protect Yourself

All these steps are meant for your protection. But there are things you can do to make sure you are protected in case this happens. First of all, never carry to many important things your wallet. The less they have access to, the better. Second, do not get careless. Know where you set your wallet at all times. You are more likely to have something happen to you if you are careless.
